Rain Forest Connection: Your Old Cell Phone Can Help Save Forests
12 million hectares of rainforest were lost in 2018 due to legal and illegal deforestation and forest fires. Global Forest Watch (GFW), supported by the University of Maryland, has calculated this worrying figure from satellite images.
NGOs and local groups are trying to stop illegal loggers on the ground, but most of them arrive too late: „When I was in Indonesia in 2011, I found that an NGO on the ground had a lot of problems protecting even a small reserve from illegal logging,“ Topher White told Tech & Nature. He founded the US startup „Rainforest Connection“ to change that.
